How Because works
Seven steps, seven pictures. Two minutes and you know everything there is to know.
Open Because
Go to askbecause.com in the browser on your phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for — you can ask straight away.
Tip: on a phone, choose "Add to Home Screen" in the browser menu and Because gets its own icon like any app.
Speak or type
Tap the big Speak button and say your question out loud, the way you would ask a friend. Or type it in the box and tap Ask. Both always work; use whichever you like.
One question at a time works best: "Why do onions make me cry?" rather than three questions in a row.
Read the answer — and the why
In a few seconds the answer appears in large, plain words. Right under it comes the part that makes Because different: a line starting with Because… that explains why it is true.
Listen, check, save
Three buttons under every answer:
- Listen reads the answer aloud. If you asked by voice, it reads automatically.
- Show sources finds three or four pages from reputable publishers — encyclopaedias, health services, universities — that back the answer up.
- Save keeps the answer in your Saved list so you can find it again.
Under the buttons, 👍 or 👎 tells us whether the answer helped. No typing needed.
Make it comfortable
In Settings choose Large or Extra large text, a colour scheme that suits your eyes (Warm paper, High contrast, Night, Yellow on black), your units (°C or °F, km or miles…) and your language.
The Look switch at the top of every screen slides between Classic — calm paper colours — and Neural — black and white over a living blue haze that pulses while Because listens and talks. The knob shows which one is on.
Create a free account (optional)
Without an account you get 5 answers to try Because, then 3 a day. A free account gives 5 answers every day and keeps your saved answers and settings the same on your phone and your computer.
Sign in with Google, Apple, or type your email and enter the 6-digit code we send you — no password to remember. We take only your email address: no name, no photo, no contacts.
Need more answers?
Premium gives 30 answers a day from the better model, Plus 50 with hard questions handed to the most capable model, and Ultra the best model for every answer. All can be cancelled any time. See Pricing.
Your answers come back at midnight, your local time. The counter at the top of the screen — "3 of 5 today" — always shows where you stand.
Good to know
"Why is the sea salty?" gets a better answer than "Tell me about the sea".
Because answers in the language you ask in — English, Slovak or German.
Because does not follow current events, prices or who holds an office. It will tell you to check an official source.
For your own health, money or legal case, Because points you to a professional — on purpose.
Common questions
Does Because remember my questions?
Only on your own device, under Recent, for five days. They are never sent to an account and never shown to anyone else. Saved answers are different: you chose to keep those.
Why did an answer appear instantly?
Someone else asked the same question recently and the answer was kept for a few days, without any name. You will see the note From Because's recent questions. It still counts as one of your answers for the day.
The microphone does nothing.
Some browsers (Firefox, and some older ones) do not support voice input. The keyboard always works. On iPhone, use Safari; on Android, Chrome.
Can I get my saved answers out?
Yes. On the Saved screen, download them as a file. On the Account screen you can download everything we hold about you, or delete your account in two taps.
